What Sensations Are Normal After Surgery
– Pain at the surgical site, manageable with painkillers.
– Swelling (sometimes significant) may appear on days 2–3 and usually starts to subside by day 3–4.
– Short-term fever (up to 38°C), bruising, and limited or painful mouth opening may occur.
– Temporary numbness or altered sensation in the face or surgical area.
– Slight oozing from the site is normal (after sinus lift — blood-tinged nasal discharge is possible).
When to Contact Your Dentist
– Persistent or worsening pain beyond 5 days.
– Bleeding lasting over 24 hours. Immediate visit required for heavy bleeding.
– Swelling that does not decrease after 5 days.
– Any doubts or concerns — contact your doctor.
What to Avoid
– No food or drink for 2 hours after surgery.
– Do not touch, clean, or rinse the surgical area yourself.
– Avoid saunas, hot baths, tanning beds, and strenuous activity for 3 days.
– After sinus lift: avoid blowing cheeks, forceful rinsing, or playing wind instruments for 3 weeks.
– No alcohol — especially when taking medications.
– Avoid or limit smoking (no more than 5 cigarettes per day).
What to Do
– Apply a cold compress (through cloth or napkin) on and off for the first 3 hours: 5 minutes on, 5 minutes off.
– Eat soft, non-hot, non-irritating foods for the first 3 days.
– Maintain excellent oral hygiene. Replace your toothbrush. Do not use an irrigator near the surgical site.
– Take all prescribed medications according to your doctor’s instructions.
– Follow-up care continues until suture removal at your scheduled visit.
Follow-Up and Further Treatment
– Your dentist will determine the timing of follow-up visits.
– After 4 months, you will need to return for a check-up, CBCT scan, and planning for implant placement.
