Your Child Had a Tooth Removed – What’s Important to Know

What You Should Do

– Ask your child not to touch the area with their tongue. Please supervise them.
– Avoid physical activity on the day of extraction.
– If your child feels pain, give the painkiller recommended by your dentist.
– Don’t feed your child for 2 hours after the procedure.
– In the first 24 hours, offer soft or puréed cool food. No chewing on the side of the removed tooth.
– Avoid hot drinks and carbonated beverages.
– Don’t brush or rinse your child’s mouth for the first 6 hours.
– After 6 hours, start gentle brushing. Be very careful near the extraction area.

What’s Normal After a Tooth Extraction

– Pain once the anesthesia wears off. Pain relief should follow your doctor’s instructions.
– Mild bleeding from the wound within the first 6 hours.
– Swelling of the cheek or lip near the extraction site. This may grow over the first 3 days, then subside.
