Tooth treatment for children (caries, pulpitis, periodontitis)

Why Baby Teeth Deserve Serious Care

It’s a common myth that cavities in baby teeth don’t matter because “they’ll fall out anyway.” In reality, ignoring problems in primary teeth can have lasting consequences.

Treating baby teeth helps:

  • Prevent infection from spreading on adult teeth
  • Support natural speech and chewing function
  • Hold the space needed for permanent teeth
  • Avoid unnecessary pain, swelling, or dental anxiety
  • Encourage good oral habits from an early age

We recommend regular check-ups and treatment at the first sign of trouble.

What We Treat – And How We Treat It

Cavities (Tooth Decay)

Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood health issues and it progresses quickly. In children, thinner enamel means bacteria can reach deeper layers faster than in adult teeth. Cavities often start as subtle white patches and may soon turn brown or form pits on the tooth’s surface.

Our approach to treating cavities:

  • In early cases: fluoride applications or protective sealants
  • When decay is visible: minimally invasive cleaning followed by a tooth-colored filling
  • For nervous children: sedation with nitrous oxide to make the process gentle and stress-free

We make the visit enjoyable by using child-friendly language, engaging with kids through play, and creating a warm, trusting connection that helps reduce anxiety and build positive associations with dental care.

Pulpitis (Inflamed Pulp Tissue)

When bacteria penetrate beyond the enamel and dentin into the soft inner pulp of the tooth, pain and swelling may follow. Pulpitis can cause persistent aching, sensitivity to temperature, and even gum inflammation. In some cases, the infection develops silently until symptoms suddenly worsen.

TRUE SMILE uses advanced, child-specific pulp treatment techniques that allow us to restore the tooth quickly and safely.

We may recommend:

  • Pulpotomy – removing part of the inflamed tissue while preserving the root
  • Pulpectomy – cleaning and sealing the full root system if the entire pulp is infected

All procedures are done using sterile isolation methods (dental dam) and real-time imaging to ensure precise and effective care. We only use materials that are proven to be safe for children.

Periodontitis (Infection Around the Tooth Root)

When dental infections are left untreated, they can spread beyond the tooth itself into the surrounding bone and gum tissues. This serious condition is called periodontitis, it can pose significant health risks, especially if it affects the developing permanent tooth underneath.

Common signs of periodontitis include:

  • Soreness or pain when chewing
  • Gum redness, swelling, or pus discharge
  • Facial puffiness or fever

Treatment options include:

  • Thorough root canal therapy and sealing of the infected tooth
  • Surgical extraction in cases where the tooth cannot be saved or poses a risk to nearby structures

At TRUE SMILE, we aim to preserve baby teeth whenever it’s safe and appropriate but protecting long-term health is always our priority.

A Calm, Caring Dental Experience for Every Child

Going to the dentist shouldn’t be frightening. That’s why we’ve created a space where children feel safe, heard, and respected. Our dentists are trained in child psychology and behavior guidance, helping even the most anxious kids feel relaxed.

To ensure comfort and safety, we offer:

  • Gentle local anesthesia
  • Topical numbing agents before injections
  • Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) for relaxation
  • General anesthesia for extensive or full-mouth treatment (when appropriate)

Our entire team works together to make dental visits something your child doesn’t have to fear.

Preventive Pediatric Dentistry

We believe the best dental problems are the ones that never happen. Prevention is key—and it starts early.

At TRUE SMILE, preventive care includes:

  • Regular cleanings to remove plaque and tartar
  • Fluoride treatments to fortify young enamel
  • Sealants to guard deep grooves and hard-to-reach areas
  • Nutrition and brushing guidance tailored to your child’s needs
  • Check-ups every 3–6 months based on age and cavity risk

Helping kids form healthy habits today means fewer fillings, fewer fears, and fewer problems tomorrow.

What Happens During Your Child’s Visit?

From the moment you walk in, we work to make your experience easy, transparent, and supportive.

We begin with a gentle visual exam and digital imaging if needed. After assessing your child’s dental health, we explain everything clearly—in language parents and kids can both understand. Most treatments are done in a single visit, and we provide step-by-step aftercare instructions.

We answer frequently asked questions

We hear this a lot, and it’s a fair question. While baby teeth do fall out, they hold space for adult teeth and help with chewing and speaking. If left untreated, a small cavity can quickly become an infection, which may affect nearby permanent teeth. Acting early prevents pain and keeps your child’s mouth healthy.

Yes, it might be. Sudden, strong pain, especially at night, can be a sign of pulpitis, which means the nerve inside the tooth may be inflamed or infected. The sooner we see her, the more likely we can stop the infection, ease her pain, and save the tooth.

Yes, many early cavities don’t hurt at all. What looks like a stain could be the beginning of tooth decay. If we catch it now, we may be able to treat it without drilling. Waiting can lead to more extensive treatment later on.

You’re not alone. Many kids feel scared during dental visits, especially if it’s a new environment. We take time to earn their trust, explain everything gently, and move at their pace. For more complex cases, we offer sedation options from mild relaxation with laughing gas to full general anesthesia, all under expert supervision.

That’s a smart concern. Losing a tooth before its natural time can lead other teeth to shift and block the space needed for adult teeth. We’ll assess the situation and may recommend a space maintainer to guide proper alignment and prevent crowding later.

Great job brushing! Still, dental visits every 3 to 6 months are key for spotting issues early, applying preventive treatments like fluoride, and helping your child become comfortable with dental care. Even with perfect brushing, kids can still get cavities in tricky spots.

Yes, of course. Bring any recent records, X-rays, or even photos from your previous clinic. We’ll review everything, assess your child’s current condition, and continue care without needing to start over.

Pain after a filling isn’t typical, especially if it lasts more than a day or two. It could mean the bite is slightly off or the decay was deeper than expected. Let’s check it out adjusting the bite or taking a closer look can usually solve the problem quickly.

It’s more common than you might think. Grinding and jaw clicking can be early signs of bite imbalance or jaw stress. We’ll take a careful look at how your child’s teeth come together and whether any support is needed.

Yes, we do. Many of our families have more than one child in care, and we’re happy to offer flexible, interest-free plans to make treatment more manageable. Just talk to our front desk during your visit and we’ll find the right solution for your situation.
