Your Child Had Dental Treatment with Local Anesthesia

What to Expect

– Numbness from local anesthesia may last 1–1.5 hours after treatment.
– Children react differently — some barely notice the numbness, others may find it strange or unpleasant.
– Reassure your child: “Your cheek is just resting and will wake up soon.”
– Watch your child during this period and distract them with a toy, game, or book.
– To prevent injury, ensure your child does not bite their lip or cheek.
– With your dentist’s approval, you may offer warm tea, sugar-free lollipop, or ice cream.

The Most Common Complication

– The most frequent issue is self-inflicted injury from biting a numb lip or cheek — usually the lower lip.

If the Lip or Cheek Was Bitten

– A bitten area may swell rapidly.
– A white film may form — this is fibrin, a natural part of healing.
– Don’t panic — healing usually occurs within a few days.
– Contact the doctor if you have concerns.

Healing Tips

– Avoid hard, rough, or sour foods.
– Do not give hot food or drinks.
– Avoid fresh juices for 3–5 days.
– If your child feels pain, give ibuprofen in an age-appropriate dose.
