Is this a dental emergency?

Some dental problems need to be seen the same day.

Contact us during opening hours if you have:

• tooth pain that is severe, keeps you awake, or does not settle down
• a tooth that has been chipped, cracked or injured
• a tooth that has been knocked out
• a filling or a crown that has come out
• swelling of the gum or face around a tooth

Go to a hospital emergency department, not to a dental clinic, if you have: difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling that is spreading towards the eye or the neck, uncontrolled bleeding, a broken jaw, or a head injury. These need immediate hospital care, and they need it whether or not our clinic is open.

Dental emergencies we treat

Severe toothache

Constant or throbbing tooth pain usually means the nerve inside the tooth or the tissue around its root is inflamed or infected. Painkillers may mask it for a while, but the cause does not go away on its own. We examine the tooth — an X-ray may be needed — and explain what is causing the pain and what the options are before anything is done. Depending on what we find, treatment may involve pulpitis treatment or root canal therapy.

Chipped, cracked or injured tooth

A broken tooth can be painful, sharp against the tongue and cheek, or simply visible when you smile. We assess how deep the damage goes — whether only enamel is affected, or the inner layers of the tooth as well — and discuss how the tooth can be restored, for example with a composite restoration.

Knocked-out tooth

A tooth that has been completely knocked out is one of the situations where time matters most — the sooner the tooth is seen, the better the chances of saving it. Contact us straight away during opening hours and tell us what happened.

We treat injuries involving a single knocked-out or displaced tooth. Dental trauma covers a wide range of injuries, and some of them are not a dental clinic case at all: if the injury also involves loss of consciousness, heavy bleeding that does not stop, a suspected broken jaw or a head injury, go to a hospital emergency department first. Once you have been seen there, we can take care of the tooth itself.

While you are on your way to us:

• pick the tooth up by the crown — the white part you normally see — and avoid touching the root
• if the tooth is dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or saline; do not scrub it, and do not use soap or disinfectant
• keep the tooth moist: in a container of milk or saline works best; never let it dry out
• do not attempt to put a child's baby tooth back into the socket

Lost filling or crown

When a filling or a crown comes out, the tooth underneath is left unprotected and often becomes sensitive to cold, heat and pressure. Keep the crown if you still have it and bring it with you — in some cases it can be re-cemented; in others the tooth needs a new restoration.

Dental abscess and swelling

An abscess is a collection of pus caused by infection at the root of a tooth or in the gum, often with throbbing pain and a swollen gum or cheek. It is one of the dental problems that should be seen promptly rather than left to settle. Please contact us during opening hours; if the swelling is spreading or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, seek immediate care at a hospital emergency department instead.

Children with dental emergencies

We see children as well as adults in urgent situations — a knocked-out or broken tooth after a fall, sudden toothache, or swelling. Call or message us and describe what happened, and we will look for the earliest time we can see your child. The same rule applies as for adults: if the injury involves a head injury, loss of consciousness or bleeding that does not stop, go to a hospital emergency department first.

What you can do before you get to us

These steps are for comfort only. They do not treat the problem, and they are not a reason to postpone an examination.

• Toothache: rinse your mouth with warm water and clean gently between the teeth to remove any trapped food. A cold compress held against the outside of the cheek can help with discomfort. Do not place tablets directly on the gum or the tooth.
• Chipped or broken tooth: rinse your mouth with warm water, keep any pieces of the tooth in a clean container, and avoid chewing on that side.
• Knocked-out tooth: handle the tooth by the crown only, keep it in milk or saline, and come to us as soon as you can.
• Lost filling or crown: keep the crown, clean it, and bring it with you. Do not try to fix it back yourself with household glue.
• Swelling: rinse gently with mild salt water and do not try to drain or squeeze the swelling.

If it is your first visit, please bring your Emirates ID or your passport. Returning patients do not need to bring anything except the crown or filling if it has come out.

Languages. Our team can see you in English, Arabic or Russian.

Our emergency hours are the same as our clinic hours: Mon–Sat 10:00–20:00, Sun 10:00–18:00. We are not a 24-hour clinic. Outside these hours, a hospital emergency department is the right place for urgent dental problems.
